Following weeks of renovation, the shop now boasts a café, self-service olive bar and new cheese, deli, bakery, fresh meat and fish counters.

There is also an increased range of non-food items, including John Lewis gifts, home entertainment items, toys and kitchen items.

A spokesman for the store said it was "unrecognisable".

As a result of the refurbishment, two benches, previously used by customers, have been donated to Preston School.

Also at the opening were the competitors in this year’s Hitchin Tilehouse Rotary Young Chef of the Year competition.

“This is a fantastic event as it showcases our wonderful local culinary talent” said Sue Manning, chair of New Generations at Tilehouse.

Entrants had to submit recipes for a 3-course healthy meal for two, costing no more than £15, with the best eight going forward to cook on the day.  Those who made it through, were given a £15 voucher by Waitrose to purchase ingredients, and were required to prepare, plate-up, and present two servings of their menu for judging by Hitchin's very own celeb chef, Andrew Turner, now at London's iconic Wiltons Restaurant.

Jake King, of Hitchin Boys’ School was judged the winner and he goes on to the district final.
