Rush hour chaos as London Underground workers strike

By Web Reporter

COMMUTERS have been hit by the first in a series of 24-hour strikes by London Underground workers.

Underground logoMillions of passengers have been facing major disruption after maintenance staff walked out at 5pm yesterday (Monday September 6) and drivers, signallers and station staff stopped work four hours later.

A full service has been operating on the Northern Line but many stations on the line are closed.

There are no trains running on the Circle, Piccadilly, Victoria and Waterloo and City lines.

The Bakerloo, District, Hammersmith and City, Jubilee and Metropolitan lines are partly suspended and there are severe delays on the Central Line.
The Rail Maritime and Transport and the Transport Salaried Staffs Association unions are protesting against plans to cut ticket office staffing levels, claiming security could be compromised.

But London Underground has insisted the plans would mean all stations would still be staffed and has pledged there will be no compulsory redundancies.

Up to 200 Jubilee and Northern line maintenance staff began a separate 24-hour strike at 7pm on Sunday.
