A NEW sandwich designed by three students at a Hitchin college has gone on sale at across the region.
The new snack, called The Fiery Fajita Melt, was conceived by Nicola Chappell, 21, Connie Willoughby, 19, and Jemma Barker, 18, from North Hertfordshire College’s Peter Jones Enterprise Academy.
It was the winner of a competition for school pupils and college students held across the east of England.
Pupils were set the challenge of designing and marketing a new sandwich filling before pitching the idea in front of a Dragon’s Den-style panel of experts.
The three students won the competition with their marketing campaign that asked customers if they ‘can handle the heat’.
As a result, their Mexican-themed sub went on sale in Subway stores across the region, for a limited time.
Subway entrepreneur Bob Moodliar, who sat on the judging panel, said: “North Hertfordshire College’s The Fiery Fajita Melt really stood out as an excellent design.
“After the team’s hard work it is brilliant to see their marketing materials and concepts come to fruition and launch in stores.”
Sarah Lee, business enterprise manager at the college, added: “The project gave the pupils a great real life learning experience.
“The opportunity to work with such a well-recognised local business added both excitement and an increased depth of understanding to their knowledge throughout the project.
“Seeing the pupils design and marketing materials in store is really the superb.”
