Mitchell Carey, 43, died in the Lister Hospital in Stevenage on August 18.

He was the widower of Mr Wilson's daughter, Anna, who died of cancer in 1998 at the age of 31. Anna was the Wilsons' inspiration for the foundation of charity, the Willow Foundation.

Mr Carey fell ill on August 16 and was taken to hospital, but was discharged into his GP's care, and admitted again after his condition deteriorated.

A spokeswoman for the East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust said: "Our deepest sympathies are with Mr Carey's family.

"While an investigation is under way it does appear that Mr Carey was given the appropriate course of treatment at our A&E department.

"Sadly his condition worsened dramatically and on his admission, staff at the Lister Hospital did everything they could to save his life."

Bob Wilson and his wife Megs set up the Willow Foundation in their daughter's memory in 1999 to help seriously ill young adults.
