Letchworth residents to pay less council tax

AFTER four years of having to pay more council tax than their neighbours in Hitchin and Baldock, householders in Letchworth will now pay the same.

Council taxPeople living in the average Band D property in all three towns will  have to pay £1,463.24 for council services for the next 12 months.

This amount represents a 0.5 per cent increase for Hitchin and Baldock but for those in Letchworth it is a 2.3 per cent decrease.

The change comes after Letchworth decided to forego its contributions to the town council.

Of the £1,463.24 bill, £196.59 will go to the district council, £1,118.83 will go to county council and £147.82 will go to Herts Police.

District councillor, Terry Hone (Con, Letchworth south west) said: “The council tax has decreased due to the fact that Letchworth has decided to wind down the town council.

“The people of Letchworth have decided that they do not need a town council and as a result council tax has been affected. The town council let personal issues affect their decisions and this is possibly the reason they lost so much support.”

Meanwhile, council tax payers living in a Band D property in Stevenage will be paying £1,455.17.

Of that bill, Stevenage Borough Council will receive £189.17, Hertfordshire County Council will receive £1,120.48  and Herts Police will get £145.52.

Stevenage Borough Council announced a freeze in its portion of the council tax for the coming year whilst North Herts has announced a slight increase of 0.5 per cent.

Villages such as Hinxworth, Pirton, Codicote and Kimpton will all have to pay £1,530.01, £1,511.37, £1,524.84 and £1,527.94 respectively in council tax this year for an average Band D property.

Hinxworth has the highest council tax level across the whole of North Herts.
