Man dies after falling down stairs at club

THE man airlifted to hospital from Hitchin Market Place on Friday after falling down a flight of stairs has died.

Shoppers were stunned when the Hertfordshire air ambulance landed in Hitchin's Market Square to attend the incident.

The man, in his 60s, fell down the stairs at Hitchin Snooker and Pool Club. Police are treating the incident as a tragic accident and the coroner has been informed.

The East of England Ambulance Service was alerted to the accident at the club in Market Square at 2.14pm and ambulance crews from Letchworth and Stevenage attended the scene before the helicopter arrived.

Ambulance service spokesman Gary Sanderson, who attended the incident, said: "A man had fallen down a flight of stairs and received life-threatening injuries. The Hertfordshire air ambulance was called in to assist at the scene."

Gary added: "The helicopter was able to land right outside the snooker club in the square and this attracted a very large crowd of onlookers.

"Paramedics worked closely with the doctor from the helicopter before the man was flown direct to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge."
