LOCAL heroes were celebrated when this year’s SoStevenage Pride of Stevenage Awards were presented.

The awards, which are supported by the Advertiser, are an opportunity to publicly thank people who make a real difference to life in our town.

They celebrate the people, groups and projects that are making great things happen in our communities, and recognise acts of kindness, selflessness and ‘going the extra mile’.

The winners who were presented with trophies and special additional prizes on Saturday night (October 29) at the Pride of Stevenage Community Reception are:

  • Alex Lang won the SoVoluntary award;
  • Gemma, Charlotte and Emma, who are part of The Reach Out Plus Project, won the SoCaring award, which was sponsored by the Westgate Shopping Centre;
  • Jill Eaton won in the SoSporting category which was sponsored by Stevenage Leisure;
  • Sailability won the SoSharing award, sponsored by North Hertfordshire College;
  • Friends of Mobbsbury Wood won the SoGreen category sponsored of Willmott Dixon;
  • Katrina Doyle was awarded SoBrave, sponsored by WJ Rowe;
  • Margaret Blakeston won SoFriendly, which was sponsored by Stevenage Homes;
  • The judges this year made a special award, SoProud, to Fred Stanton for his long-term commitment to the young footballers of Stevenage Borough Juniors.
  • Cllr Sharon Taylor, leader of Stevenage Council and chair of SoStevenage, presented the awards alongside the Advertiser’s editor Sue Webb.

    Sharon said: “Congratulations to all the winners – and to all those who were nominated. It was incredibly difficult to decide who should get the award in each category as everyone nominated deserves recognition.

    "These awards celebrate great ambassadors for Stevenage. Their stories show what we can achieve when people are really set on making life better for our town and its community.”
