Spate of bike thefts in Letchworth

POLICE are warning cyclists to be vigilant when leaving their bikes unattended after three cycles were stolen in Letchworth.

The first incident occurred between 10pm on Thursday, September 2 and 7am on Friday, September 3. The owner had left the grey and black man’s Collard Butler mountain bike secured to railings overnight and found it missing in the morning.

The second incident occurred between 10.50am and 11am on Monday (September 6). The owner left her silver Raleigh mountain bike secured to railings outside Morrison’s supermarket in Broadway, Letchworth. The offender cut through the lock before making off with the bike.

The third incident occurred between 4pm and 4.15pm, also on Monday. The owner had left her silver Dawes bike locked to the cycle rack at Morrison’s in Broadway. She was only in the shop for 15 minutes and when she came out, it had gone.

A witness reported seeing a man with light brown hair, medium build, wearing black trousers and a sporty black coat, riding a similar bike in the vicinity of North Herts College, off Michaels Road.

Safer Neighbourhood Inspector for Letchworth, Baldock and Royston, Jason Thorne, said: “Have you been offered a bike from an unusual source? If anyone has any information or suspicion about these thefts, no matter how insignificant you might think it is, please get in touch.

“You can contact us by calling 0845 33 00 222 and quoting crime reference G2/10/1945.

“We would also advise all cyclists to keep your bike as secure as possible. If there’s somewhere secure you can store your bike overnight, then lock it up indoors.

“Always secure your bike with a good quality lock Always lock it to an immovable object like a bike rack, even if you are just leaving it for a few moments and why not register it on the free online database www.immobilise.com - that way if it is stolen, it could help us return it to you."
