Stevenage hold Spurs to 0-0 draw in FA Cup

by Sue Webb

A fantastic team performance against Premiership Spurs put Stevenage into the FA Cup sixth round draw.

Boro' will face Bolton at The Lamex Stadium in the quarter-finals should they overcome Tottenham in their fifth round replay.

On a cold, sunny afternoon in Stevenage, Spurs' superstars never really got going and were as much outsmarted by the bouncy Stevenage pitch as by Boro's determination to shut down any creative endeavour.

Stevenage manager Gary Smith said after the game: "Our overall performance was outstanding and the players are just delighted.  We're so pleased - we give ourselves every chance in the replay - they've got a tough schedule coming up and we'll go there with confidence and energy."

Smith's Stevenage certainly had their chances and most of their most threatening moves were orchestrated by teenage midfielder Luke Freeman, permanantly signed at Christmas, whose skills looked on a par with anything offered by Spurs' multi-millionaires.

Meanwhile, Spurs boss Harry Redknapp was furious on the sideline, as pass after pass went astray and his players struggled to stay upright.

Squad player Danny Rose looked the most threatening of the Spurs players, as he used his aggression to get around the back and cross into the area. Their best chance fell to Kyle Walker, who failed to meet a Rose cross with the net gaping in front of him.

As the first half progressed, it was clear that Spurs' late rearrangement of their line-up following the withdrawal of poorly Luka Modric this morning, wasn't working. Indeed, Modric may well have made the difference, as Boro' managed to nullify the makeshift Spurs midfield and forced the north Londoners into playing the long-ball game. And with the diminutive pairing of Jermain Defoe and Louis Saha up front, Spurs literally had very little to offer up front.

Tottenham started the second half in dynamic fashion after a half-time roasting from Redknapp which must have rocked the passing A602 traffic.

Stevenage keeper Chris Day was pulled into his first real action of the afternoon a minute after the break, when he turned round a shot from Gareth Bale, who went on his own, with the bit firmly between his teeth.

Spurs, clearly geed up by their half-time talking-to, then turned up the pressure, culminating in Saha putting the ball in the net - but fortunately for Boro', Scott Parker was in an offside position on the line.

But instead of giving Spurs the incentive to push on, it was Stevenage who hit a purple patch. Joel Byrom - who had three long-range blasters which got closer at every attempt - was the chief aggressor in a mixed afternoon for him.

Redknapp tried to ring the changes, bringing on Nico Kranjcar for Kyle Walker, which meant Rose - Spurs' most effective attacking player - moved to right back and Bale was pushed out wide to accommodate Kranjcar in the middle.

But the change of team shape still failed to threaten steady Boro, even when Aaron Lennon was brought on for Rose. Indeed, Scott Laird did an admirable job of marshalling Lennon, mostly containing the fast, fresh and firey England man.

Defoe shot wide with four minutes left on the clock, when really he should have laid off to Lennon or the unmarked Parker - but that was the story of Spurs' day...not enough thought given to anything.

Whereas Boro' rightly went into the game without fear. And it shook Spurs to the core. It wasn't a case of arrogance, just that Spurs simply didn't know how to handle the pitch, players or the occasion.

They will be happier at White Hart Lane, of course. But then again, what have Boro got to lose?
