Stevenage householders 'waste hundreds of pound on heating'

HOUSEHOLDERS in Stevenage are wasting hundreds of pounds a year on heating their homes, according to a new report.

HeatingAlmost £1.1million – around £210 for each household in the town which is equivalent to £23,000 a week – is being spent on heat which is then lost through poorly insulated lofts and walls and which could be retained with proper insulation.

The report has been compiled by the Eastern Carbon Reduction Initiative (ECRI) which aims to help people cut their energy costs by giving them advice and offering information on the range of home insulation granys that are available to every household.

The ECRI is working with Stevenage Borough Council to reduce fuel poverty, domestic energy consumption and carbon emissions by helping households to adopt low energy and renewable energy technology solutions.

Eastern CRI programme director Bruce Pittingale said: “Householders in Stevenage can be warmer and save money. A home could be insulated for as little as £149 and some people such as the over 70s qualify to have their insulation installed for free.

“Insulation is the first step on a pathway for households to reduce energy consumption, eradicate fuel poverty, cut household bills and deliver carbon savings through the adoption of low energy and renewable energy technology solutions.”
