Work due to start on Lister Hospital car park

A NEW road layout will be coming to Lister Hospital in a fortnight as work begins on the planned £7.9m multi-storey car park.

Being built on the site of the existing main public car park, there will be a number of changes to the hospital’s roads, entrances and public parking areas when the year-long project starts on Monday September 13.

As it stands, the current main road entrance off Coreys Mill Lane will be for blue badge holders and drop-off only, but pedestrian access from the road will remain unchanged.

The majority of public parking spaces will be sited in the car park towards the rear of the hospital, with new walkways, signage and mobility help points being in place to support patients and their visitors driving to and from the Lister.

The changed arrangements are being included in routine letters being sent to Lister patients being asked to attend the hospital the date work commences.
North and East Herts NHS Trust’s chief executive, Nick Carver, said: “In beginning to build our new car park, we have had to make some pretty big changes in how people drive around the Lister site and where they park.

“Although we have worked hard to make sure that as many people as possible are aware of these changes, it is inevitable that disruption may be caused to some people coming to the hospital – for which we apologise in advance.

“We have doing everything we can to ensure that the public is inconvenienced as little as possible during the year-long building project – including maintaining the same overall number of public parking spaces at the hospital as we have now.

“In return, our new car park will all but end many of the concerns that people have when it comes to parking at the Lister.”

The car park is the third phase of the multi-million redevelopment of the Lister, which includes the £47m Lister Surgicentre and the £16.4m maternity unit expansion, both of which will open next year.
