Children recognised by Anglia in Bloom

Children from a Letchworth school were among those recognised for their contribution to the Garden City’s ‘In Bloom’ campaign last week.

CrocusesNorth Herts District Council’s (NHDC) chairman, Cllr Michael Weeks, gave out the awards at Icknield Infant School to those who had made an outstanding contribution to Letchworth In Bloom, part of the Anglia In Bloom competition.

Anglia In Bloom judges were very impressed with the projects at Icknield School, led by teacher Jeanette Jones, including a secret garden and vegetable plots.  When the produce is ready for harvest it is picked, prepared and eaten in the classroom, providing the children with a hands-on lesson in where their food comes from.

Cllr Michael Weeks, chairman of NHDC, said: “It was great to be able to meet some of the people behind these wonderful community projects that help to make Letchworth such a lovely place to live and work.  My thanks go out to them all for their efforts, particularly the children who are our future in carrying on this work.”

Certificates for those whose projects were entered in the 2011 Anglia in Bloom were awarded to:

•North Herts District Council

•First Capital Connect

•Icknield School

•Fair Trade Letchworth

•Garden Square Shopping Centre

•Bickerdikes Garden Centre
