Good value wines from France and Italy

By Amanda Johnston

ON a quest for some easy-drinking, value-for-money French reds, I settled on two from Tesco. The first, its own label Cuvee Prestige Vin de France (£4.99), is a medium-bodied red from the South. It proved to be soft and fruity, good for midweek quaffing and a good match for most meat dishes.

Wine with Amanda JohnstonThe second, Tesco Claret, bottled by Yvon Mau, an extremely reliable Bordeaux producer, was well worth £4.49. Again, this fruity red is a good match for most red meat and chicken dishes, and would be a good choice for barbecues or outside entertaining.

I was also lucky enough to try a really substantial wine, Domaines Paul Mas Vignes de Nicole Cabernet Merlot 2009, on offer at Majestic at £7.49 (from £9.99) until the end of August. The grapes for this big, bold, spicy red are grown in clay-rich and chalky soil on the hillsides of the Herault valley, producing a bouquet of blackberries and cherries, rich flavours of black and red berry fruits and a hint of oak, finishing with well-balanced, dry tannins that linger on the palate. This will make a great accompaniment to barbecued and grilled red meats, spicy stews and steak.

Finally, two to snap up at Waitrose. Saluti Vino Bianco, Italy, is £4.39 until August 16. It’s rare to find a wine under £4.50 worth buying, but this light white is ideal for alfresco events and everyday drinking. Likewise, its red counterpart, Saluti Vino Rosso, on offer at the same price, has plenty of fruit.
